FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Holyoke, MA — Puerto Ricans in Holyoke are uniting in solidarity with other Boricuas across the country and on the island, demanding justice for the people in Puerto Rico. They’re are calling for the embattled Governor Ricardo Rosselló to step down. This comes after leaked chat room conversations between Rosselló and 11 others are laced with profane, homophobic, sexist comments and mocked victims of Hurricane Maria.

This month, the FBI arrested two of his former top officials on fraud charges. Rosselló’s administration has been under scrutiny for its spending of government funds after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017.

“As an organization whose mission is to be a catalyst and partner for a vibrant, sustainable and powerful Puerto Rican/Afro-Caribbean in Holyoke, we are hurt, sad and disrespected by the actions of the governor of Puerto Rico. We were one of the lead agencies in Holyoke to fundraise money and donations to send to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and to learn and see evidence of mocking victims, spending funds and disrespectful comments towards our people, we are just not going to tolerate it and stay silent.” – written statement by Board members of Nueva Esperanza

“We invite everyone to join us on Friday, July 19th at 4:30pm in front of the City Hall in solidarity with our people in Puerto Rico as we share how as the Puerto Rican diaspora in Holyoke and across the world, are standing up, loud and proud against corruption, disrespect and abuse.”
