Greater Holyoke Latinx Heritage Month Announced

Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 is National Latinx Heritage Month, and Nueva Esperanza is celebrating with cultural, educational, artistic events. The Nueva Esperanza Inaugural “Greater Holyoke Latinx Heritage Month,” This calendar is only for events sponsored and presented by Nueva Esperanza Inc., its community partners, and affiliates. September 15th, 2018, The Pineapple Diaries – This 120 minute workshop will consist of an introduction/screening of two monologues from the show “The Pineapple Diaries” followed by monologue writing and performances from participants.

September 16th, 2018, Springfield Puerto Rican Day Parade – March with Nueva Esperanza at the Springfield Puerto Rican Day Parade. Join us as we march down Main Street in Springfield to celebrate Puerto Rican Culture and idenity.

September 21st, 2018 – 150th Anniversary of El Grito de Lares – The Hispanic-American Library Inc., The Puerto Rican Cultural Project & El Sol Latino present a documentary film about Juan Enrique Segarra Palmer, member of Los Macheteros (1970s). Followed by conversation with film producer Jose Ramon Garcia.

September 23rd, 2018 – Roberto Clemente Softball Tournament; Nueva Esperanza in collaboration with One Holyoke CDC, in honor of the 25th Anniversary of Roberto Clemente Street, present the R. Clemente Softball Tournament. *Fee for Participating Teams*
Proceeds to benefit the Holyoke Old Timers League

September 29th, 2018 – Jurakan; Nacion En Resistencia – This movie screen summerizes 117 years of history in 90 minutes; full of color and music. Retold by a wide range of Puerto Ricans- Historians, Sociologists, Economists, Professors, Musicians, Filmmakers, and more, “Jurakán” tells the true story of Puerto Rico.

October 3rd, 2018 Magdalena Gomez – Globally acclaimed artists & poet Magdalena Gomez brings an evening of poetry, music, and a review of her latest book. As part of the Azucar Book Club, the evening will feature food, readings and a Q&A.

October 8th, 2018 Taino Remembrance Day; Candle light vigil mourning the losses suffered by the Taino peoples and their cultures through colonization, diseases, warfare, massacres, and forced assimilation – Both at the hands of Columbus and now PROMESA/POST HURRICANE MARIA.

October 12th – 14th, 2018; Dancing on My Cockroach Killers the Musical – Palante Theater Company and MIFA/Victory Theater of Holyoke present this fiery bilingual musical, sharing the tales of human struggle. Based on Magdaelna Gomez’s works.
